The 5-Second Scan That Prevents Problems
In a busy school day, the staff move constantly. Classrooms, hallways, entrances, recess, dismissal. It’s easy to go from one task to the next without ever pausing.
That’s where small gaps begin.
The 5-Second Scan is a simple habit that helps close those gaps without adding time, training, or complexity.
It’s exactly what it sounds like.
Before entering or moving through a space, take five seconds to quickly assess your surroundings.
Not a full inspection. Not a disruption. Just a quick, intentional look.

What to Look For
During those five seconds, staff should focus on three key areas:
1. Doors
Are exterior doors closed and secure
Is any door propped open or being held open
2. People
Does everyone appear to belong
Is there anyone unfamiliar, out of place, or unsupervised
3. Environment
Anything unusual or out of place
Items that don’t belong or seem unattended
Why It Matters
Most school safety issues don’t start as major incidents.
They start as small, unnoticed details.
A door left open.
Someone was allowed in without question.
A moment where no one was paying attention.
The 5-Second Scan interrupts that pattern.
It creates a culture where staff are not just present, but aware.
What This Is Not
This is not a new procedure.
It does not replace your existing protocols.
It does not require extra time or meetings.
It’s a mindset shift.
A small, consistent habit that strengthens everything already in place.
Building the Habit
The key is consistency.
Encourage staff to use the 5-Second Scan when:
Entering a classroom or hallway
Returning from recess or specials
Passing by exterior doors
During arrival and dismissal
Over time, it becomes automatic.
Closing Thought
School safety is not built on one big action.
It’s built on small actions repeated consistently.
Five seconds is all it takes to notice something before it becomes a problem.
