Subject: This Week’s Safety Reminder: Suspicious Items and Unattended Bags
Staff,
This week’s SafeSchools Minute™ focuses on Suspicious Items and Unattended Bags.
An unattended bag or unusual item does not automatically mean there is a threat, but it should not be ignored.
If you notice something that appears out of place or cannot be connected to a known person, do not touch, move, open, or examine it closely. Keep others away from the area and report it immediately through our established school procedure.
When reporting, provide the exact location and a clear description of what you observed from a safe distance.
Please take one minute to review the attached reminder.
Observe from a safe distance, protect the area, and report what you see.
Thank you for helping us respond to unusual items calmly, safely, and consistently.

An unattended bag or unusual item does not automatically mean there is a threat, but it should never be ignored.
If something appears out of place, unusual for the location, or cannot be connected to a known person, staff should avoid touching, moving, opening, or examining it closely.
The priority is to create distance, keep others away, and report the item immediately through the school’s established procedure.
When making the report, provide the exact location and a clear description of what you observed.
If an item is suspicious, do not investigate it yourself.
-
What should you do if you discover an unattended or suspicious item?
Suggested response:
Staff should:
• Do not touch, move, open, or handle the item
• Keep students and others away from the area
• Notify the appropriate school personnel immediately
• Provide the exact location
• Describe the item from a safe distance
• Follow any evacuation or movement instructions that are givenAvoid using personal judgment to decide that the item is harmless before reporting it.
-
Pay particular attention to:
• Bags or packages left in unusual locations
• Items near entrances, exits, vehicles, or restricted areas
• Objects that do not appear to belong in the setting
• Packages with unusual markings, wires, stains, odors, or damage
• Items left behind after events or deliveries
• Staff or students attempting to move an unknown item
• Areas where unattended belongings may easily go unnoticedThe goal is not to create alarm. It is to recognize when something deserves immediate attention.
-
This week, practice how you would report an unattended or suspicious item without approaching it.
Ask yourself:
• What is the exact location?
• What does the item look like?
• Is anyone nearby who may own it?
• Can I keep others away from the area?
• Who should I notify immediately?Observe from a safe distance, protect the area, and report what you see.
