The School Safety Question Every Principal Should Ask Before the New School Year

Every August, schools across the country prepare for a new beginning.

Emergency plans are reviewed.
Staff handbooks are updated.
Fire drills are scheduled.
Visitor procedures are discussed.
Exterior doors are checked.
New employees are introduced to school policies.

These are all important parts of opening a school safely.

But there's one question I believe deserves just as much attention, and it isn't found on any compliance checklist.

If you asked every member of your staff, "What is one safety responsibility that belongs specifically to you?" would they answer without hesitation?

The answer tells you more about your school's safety culture than almost anything else.

Safety Culture Isn't Written. It's Lived.

Every school has policies.

Most have comprehensive emergency plans.

Many have invested in cameras, secure vestibules, visitor management systems, and access control.

Those things absolutely matter.

But none of them replace the decisions made by people throughout the school day.

Technology can alert you to a problem.

People often prevent the problem from happening in the first place.

That's why culture matters.

Culture is what people do when no one reminds them.

It's a teacher pulling a classroom door shut because it's habit.

It's an office secretary questioning an unfamiliar adult, even though they're busy.

It's a custodian noticing a door that didn't latch and reporting it immediately.

It's a substitute asking about lockdown procedures before students arrive, rather than assuming every school operates the same way.

None of those actions are dramatic.

Yet collectively, they create an environment that's significantly safer.

The Danger Isn't a Lack of Knowledge

One thing I've learned as a School Security Specialist is that most staff already know the rules.

Ask a teacher if exterior doors should remain locked.

They'll answer correctly.

Ask if visitors should check in through the main office.

Again, they'll know the answer.

The challenge usually isn't knowledge.

The challenge is recall.

Months pass.

The school gets busy.

Testing season arrives.

Holiday events fill the calendar.

Students require attention.

Gradually, small safety habits begin competing with dozens of other daily priorities.

No one decides to become complacent.

Complacency happens quietly.

That's why reinforcement matters.

Why One Reminder Can Make a Difference

Some people underestimate the value of a simple reminder.

I don't.

I've watched a single weekly reminder spark conversations in staff lounges.

I've seen teachers remind each other about procedures because of something they read that morning.

I've seen staff report issues they may have otherwise walked past because a topic happened to be fresh in their minds.

Awareness isn't created once.

It's maintained.

Just like we continuously reinforce academic expectations with students, safety expectations benefit from regular reinforcement with adults.

Small reminders don't replace drills.

They make drills more meaningful because staff have been thinking about safety all year instead of only during annual training.

Before Your First Staff Meeting...

Try asking one question.

"What is one safety responsibility that belongs specifically to you?"

Not to your administration.

Not to your security officer.

Not to your custodian.

To you.

If every employee has an immediate answer, you've likely built something much stronger than compliance.

You've built ownership.

And ownership is where a true safety culture begins.

The strongest schools aren't the ones that simply have the best security equipment.

They're the ones where every adult believes they play a role in keeping students safe.

Because school safety isn't built during emergencies.

It's built on ordinary Tuesdays, in ordinary hallways, by ordinary people making small, consistent decisions.

Those decisions become habits.

Those habits become culture.
