    This week’s SafeSchools Minute™ focuses on Fire Drill Accountability.

    Getting everyone safely out of the building is only the first part of a successful evacuation. Once your group reaches the designated evacuation area, accountability must happen immediately.

    Please take attendance, compare your count with your roster, and report any missing, additional, or injured student using our established procedure.

    Do not assume that a student who is missing from your group is with another class, in another area, or already accounted for. Any discrepancy should be reported promptly so school leaders and emergency responders have accurate information.

    Before our next drill, make sure you know where your roster or accountability materials are located and how you are expected to report your status.

  • A fire drill is not complete simply because everyone has exited the building.

    The most important step after evacuation is accountability. Staff must know who is with them, identify anyone who is missing or unaccounted for, and report that information immediately using the school’s established procedure.

    Do not assume a missing student is with another class, in the nurse’s office, or already accounted for by someone else. Confirm it.

    Accurate accountability helps school leaders and emergency responders quickly determine whether anyone may still be inside the building.

  • What should you do if your student count does not match your attendance or roster after evacuating?

    Suggested response:

    Remain with your group, recount, check your roster, and immediately report the discrepancy using the school’s established accountability procedure.

    Staff should not leave the evacuation area to search for a missing student unless specifically directed to do so.

  • Pay attention to:

    • Whether rosters or accountability materials are readily available
    • Students joining the wrong class or group during evacuation
    • Staff moving away from their assigned group before accountability is complete
    • Delays in taking attendance after reaching the evacuation area
    • Missing, additional, or injured students not being reported immediately
    • Confusion about how your school communicates an “all accounted for” status

    Every group should be accounted for as quickly and accurately as possible.

  • Before the next fire drill, take a moment to confirm:

    • Where your roster or accountability tool is located
    • Where your assigned evacuation area is
    • How you will indicate that everyone is accounted for
    • How you will report a missing or additional student
    • Who you should communicate that information to
